UnityPoint Health Phlebotomist Specimen Collect in Sioux City, Iowa

4am-12:30pm, rotating weekends and holidays

$1,500 Sign on Bonus!

Primary responsibility of the phlebotomist is to obtain specimens from inpatients, lab outpatients and patients in hospital outpatient departments. Performs point of care testing as appropriate. Fosters professional patient relationships. Maintains specimen equipment and performs clerical duties involving the laboratory. Maintains records of performance as defined by regulatory requirements and hospital standard operating procedures.

Clinical Excellence/Patient Care

  • Consistently applies and adheres to the Department Standard Operating Procedures for proper identification, including emergency patient identification protocols and completes necessary documentation.

  • Uses proper technique to obtain correct and adequate specimens on all inpatients, ED patients, and outpatients.

  • Completes test ordering functions correctly; carefully and correctly labels and processes specimens and completes computer documentation.

  • Participates on Code Blue, Trauma, Rapid Response, Sepsis and Stroke Alerts, and MI Alert teams.

  • Obtains blood from off-site patients (nursing homes, assisted living facilities, group homes, etc.).

Technical and Operational Expertise

  • Arranges and prioritizes workload to ensure timely completion of stat, timed collections, and routine work orders.

  • Operates testing equipment according to department protocol, performing and recording maintenance, QC, and proficiency testing functions at required intervals.

  • Complies with department rules and regulations; consistently neat and tidy in appearance.

  • Proficient in collection of specimens from vein, artery (including femoral artery), or capillary (finger or heel stick); including blood cultures.

  • Performs intradermal skin puncture, reads, and records test results appropriately.

  • Performs POC testing in accordance with the written clinical laboratory policy and procedure.

  • Validates that all samples collected by nursing personnel, and from patients with indwelling vascular access are collected in accordance with laboratory policy and procedure and labeled appropriately.

  • Performs Chain of Custody drug screen/breath alcohol collections as appropriate.

Communication and Promotion of Educational Skills

  • Courteous and pleasant in interactions with patients; protects patient confidentiality and respects the Patient Bill of Rights.

  • Demonstrates adequate communication skills with patients, co-workers and others; response to Vocera pages are timely, appropriate, and effective.

  • Willingly participates in the training and orientation of new phlebotomy personnel and lab students and offers positive suggestions for Department improvement.

  • Reads policies and procedures; reads communication book entries, attends huddles, and reads huddle minutes when unable to attend.

Education:

High School Diploma or equivalency.

Graduate of Phlebotomy Program.

Experience:

None required. On the job training provided can be provided.

1-2 years prior phlebotomy experience.

License(s)/Certification(s):

Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

ASCP Phlebotomy Certification.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.

Microsoft Office – basic computer skills.

Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions.
