Job Description

Coordinate medical services for the general incarcerated individual (I/I) population to meet applicable policies and standards by:

  • Complete I/I clinics at NCCF and other DOC facilities as delegated by the DOC Medical Director

  • Provide medical screening to the I/Is to include assessments of acute or chronic medical health problems, obtain & collection a database of the I/I's health and psychosocial history, perform a complete physical examinations and order diagnostic test to include labs, x-rays, EKGs or referrals to off-site specialists at UIHC.

  • Complete required documentation for each requested test on ICON medical system

  • Orders prescribed medication on ICON Medical system for each acute or chronic disease diagnosed by following the DOC formulary

  • Treats I/Is acute injuries to include suturing of lacerations or other emergent situations as they occur throughout the work day

  • Each clinic day will review and sign medical referral for I/Is seen off-site at specialty clinics to include reviewing UIHC recommendations. Order and prescribe medication and diagnostic testing on ICON medical system

  • Review and sign each x-ray report from the contracted radiologist or local hospital radiology department

  • Each day review all labs results on ICON medical system

  • Each day co-sign verbal or phone orders on ICON medical system

  • Perform annual physical examinations as required by DOC policy

  • Upon completion of physical exams, identify and diagnose newly found health problems

  • Monitor chronic medical diseases of I/Is as identified in ICON medical system as required by DOC policy

  • Assess and monitor I/Is deteriorating medical conditions and correspond via telephone or email with the DOC Medical Director for possible transfer of patient to UIHC or IMCC infirmary

  • Complete accurate and timely documentation in ICON medical system to maintain accurate records in accordance to DOC Health Services policy and standards

  • Follow DOC policy and procedures and respond to and provide primary practitioner services in emergent situations including but not limited to: CPR, AED, Oxygen, Nasal/oral suctioning

  • Be present during scheduled telemed appointments for I/Is to communicate specific medical knowledge and assessment to UIHC practitioner to help assist with appropriate diagnosis and treatment of I/I health condition to obtain optimal health of patient.

  • Review employee health records and lab results in ICON medical system weekly and document respirator wear

  • Assess and evaluate employees and I/Is with potential exposures to blood borne pathogens and order appropriate follow up and labs and provide education as per DOC policy

  • Review charts of new I/Is transferring in weekly to familiarize yourself and ensure proper follow up and monitoring of chronic diseases per DOC policy

  • Attend Pharmacy and Therapeutic meetings as scheduled by DOC Medical Director

  • Attend DOC physician meetings as scheduled by DOC medical director. Review tentative UIHC appointments of I/Is as required by DOC Medical Director

  • Attend scheduled DOC formulary Review Committee meetings and verbalize recommendations or clinic advice to DOC Pharmacy Director.

  • Attend NCCF health services meetings as scheduled by Nursing Services Director

  • Attend Health and Safety meetings as scheduled required by DOC policy

  • Conduct QA/AI meetings as scheduled and required by DOC Policy

  • Attend any other meetings as directed by DOC Medical Director

  • Ensure NCCF medical services comply with DOC approved safety and sanitation as well as infection control policy

  • Provide information as directed by DOC Medical Director for QI/QA

  • Provide testimony either written or oral for court cases as needed

  • Make recommendations to DOC Medical Director relative to health services policy and procedures which may impact the delivery of health services to the I/I population

  • Report scheduling problems to the Nursing Services Director

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's Degree in Nursing and certification as a clinical nurse specialist, nurse midwife, nurse practitioner or registered nurse anesthetist;

OR

graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with satisfactory completion of a formal advanced practice educational program of study in a nurse practitioner program and appropriate clinical experience as approved by the Iowa Board of Nursing.

Additional Qualification Requirements

Licensure as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) and registered as an ARNP by the Iowa Board of Nursing (IBON). For additional information review the IBON Iowa Administrative Rules at 655--7.2(152).

The successful candidate must also successfully pass criminal background, abuse registry, OIG, EPLS, and National Sex Offender registry checks.
