Trinity Health Financial Counselor - Cancer Center - Full Time - Day Shift in Mason City, Iowa

Position Purpose:

This position is responsible for providing financial counseling to patients, researching financial and drug assistance programs, and works closely with reimbursement staff, pre-authorization staff, and the business office to ensure timely account follow up.

What You Will Do:

  • Meets with patients to provide details regarding insurance coverage and personal responsibility of costs for care.

  • Verifies coverage details for potentially underinsured patients, identifying atypical gaps in coverage.

  • Creates and provides a billing estimate of patient's financial obligations to the institution for their proposed treatment plan.

  • Identifies uninsured and underinsured patients prior to the onset of treatment.

  • Research patient assistance programs and drug assistance programs for patients.

  • Educates patients regarding insurance coverage and out-of-pocket expenses owed to the institution; addresses patient questions and concerns regarding cost of care; notifies physician if patient chooses not to proceed with treatment for financial reasons.

  • Protects the financial standing of MercyOne Medical Center, North Iowa by determining appropriate payment plans and arranging payment on deposits due.

  • Counsels' patients who cannot pay according to the payment schedule, determining appropriate internal and external patient assistance programs to contact for additional support​.

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Associates or Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration or related field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience is preferred.

  • A minimum of two years of prior billing experience for physician practice is preferred.

  • A minimum of two years of oncology business experience is preferred.

  • Knowledge of insurance industry, medical terminology, reimbursement and pre-certification is preferred.

  • Knowledge of Medicare-Part A and B (CMS) policies on billing, reimbursement and other third-party reimbursement is preferred.

  • Knowledge of federal and state regulations, insurance policies, and procedures is preferred.
