Description:

Responsible for reviewing documentation, assigning accurate CPT and diagnosis codes, and entering codes into EHR and Cerner coding abstract and/or 3M Arms. Sources of documentation may include office services, nursing home visits, inpatient, ER, outpatient hospital visits, and lab requisitions.

Responsible for communicating with providers if their documentation does not support the billing code they selected.

Position Purpose:

Responsible for reviewing documentation, assigning accurate CPT and diagnosis codes, and entering codes into EHR and/or Cerner coding abstract and/or 3M Arms. Sources of documentation may include office services, nursing home visits, inpatient, ER, outpatient hospital visits, and lab requisitions. The clinic coding specialist will also be responsible for communicating with providers if their documentation does not support the billing code they selected.

What You Will Do:

  • Interprets provider service documentation and verifies the selected CPT-4 codes and diagnosis codes for the encounter. Communicates with service provider if there is a discrepancy between the documentation and the code selection.

  • Assures codes reported to the claim are supported in the medical record documentation for the services selected for "audit" or "review."

  • Works with the Coding Supervisor and /or Clinic Coding Auditor/Educator to resolve any on-going issues with provider documentation or reactions to feedback and education.

  • Monitors effectiveness of educational efforts through changed documentation or coding patterns

  • Maintains current knowledge regarding CPT-4 and diagnosis coding and is responsible for understanding changes that occur.

  • Interacts regularly with providers, clinical staff, patient registration and laboratory staff regarding specific documentation relating to coding requirements, questions, and concerns.

  • Notifies Coding Supervisor or Clinic Coding Auditor regarding special education needs for providers or staff.

  • Maintains productivity standard. Is responsible for reaching out to Coding Supervisor for support if coding is not current.

  • Maintains current knowledge of third-party payers guidelines in order to effectively and accurately capture revenue.

Hours:

Fulltime / Monday - Friday / No weekends or Holidays

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Post high school education is preferred

  • College coursework in medical terminology is required

  • College coursework in Anatomy and Physiology and coding is highly desired

  • Current coding certification required

  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist – Physician Based (CCS-P), Certified Professional Coder (CPC). Will consider other credentials.
