Description: About the Opportunity

MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center has a part-time opportunity for an experienced ARNP or PA to join the Emergency Department medical staff! Join the team of 9 experienced Physicians and 3 experienced APP's. This is a 21-bed Level III Trauma Center with approximately 27,000 annual visits. The team in the Emergency Department is enhanced with experienced nurses, scribes, medical assistants, CT, x-ray, MRI, etc. APP hours are 11am-11pm.

The Advanced Practice Provider in the MercyOne Emergency Department provides quality patient care in the emergency setting. The duties of the Advanced Practice Provider cannot be rigidly defined, but the following duties characterize the commonly expected duties of the position in accordance with state and federal law in collaboration with the supervising physician(s).

  • Demonstrates customer service to others as a number one priority and accomplishes this byintegrating Service Excellence into all aspects of the work day, taking responsibility forservice recovery and working for outcomes that delight the customer.

  • Supports change in speech and actions by freely utilizing talents to implement change, by being a team player and by modeling the Standards of Behavior.

  • Evaluates any patient of the practice to elicit medical history and provide a physical exam.

  • Assesses, diagnoses, and treats medical problems.

  • Provides appropriate and accuratedocumentation and/or dictation for all patient encounters.

  • Orders appropriate laboratory, radiologic, and related studies, procedures or therapies as appropriate to the patient in collaboration with the emergency department physicians.

  • Performs therapeutic procedures inclusive, but not limited to, injections, immunizations, intravenous infusions, suturing, and gynecological exams.

  • Manages common medical problems and side effects associated with treatmenttherapies.

  • Provides patient education and counseling regarding mental and physical health.

  • Assists the assigned emergency physician(s) in the delivery of services to patients requiring continuing care in home, nursing facility or hospital settings.

  • Refers patients to appropriate specialists.

  • Maintains awareness of community services, agencies, resources and health facilities.

  • Provides immediate evaluation, treatment and institution of procedures essential to providing appropriate response to emergency medical problems.

  • Assists in the evaluation and acquisition of new equipment.

  • Admits patients to hospital or health care facility in collaboration with physician.

  • Administers and/or orders appropriate medications.

  • Directs other medical personnel in the provision and execution of patient care.

  • Participates in the orientation of new employees and students.

  • Promotes and maintains positive working relationships in a collegial manner with co-workers, medical staff and personnel of other departments and demonstrates effective communication skills.

  • Assists others needing help as necessary and displays flexibility in job responsibilities.

  • Participates in achieving the department budget by managing own work hours, flexing and staffing to volumes, keeping OT to a minimum, utilizing supplies appropriately and by continually applying process improvement techniques to eliminate waste in work flows.

  • Participates in the application of CQI principles and in the department’s Quality Management Plan by assisting in development and data collection.

  • Participates in the department’s Gallup Impact Planning.

  • Attends and participates in department staff and committee meetings.

  • Participates in peer evaluations and self -evaluation and goal setting.

  • Communicates with and perform duties following Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa Service Excellence Standards of Behavior.

  • Provides competent patient care to the above indicated patient populations by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures and treatments. (if applicable)

  • Communicates with and performs duties following MercyOne North Iowa Guiding Behaviors.

  • Supports and abides by all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures.

  • Proactively identifies safety concerns surrounding the work environment.

  • Acts in a professional manner reflecting the mission, philosophy and values of MercyOne North Iowa and the Sisters of Mercy.

  • Performs other responsibilities as requested by the Medical Director, Emergency Department and Director of Emergency Services. .

A. Education:

  • Graduate of a Masters Prepared Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant program. *Required

B. Experience

  • Demonstrated competence in a clinical setting for 3 years is required*. ARNP/PA experience is required, experience can be as a nurse or related

C. Censure and Certification

  • Must maintain a current license to practice in the state of Iowa as a Nurse practitioner/Physician Assistant.

  • National certification is required.

  • Must have demonstrated competence in ACLS and ATLS.

D. Special Skills, Competencies, and Aptitudes

  • MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center privileges.

  • Must possess good communication and organization skills.

  • Must possess the sensitivity and understanding to work with cancer patients.

  • Must possess the ability to work under pressure due to fluctuating workloads.

  • Must possess the ability to work as a team.

E. Recommended Qualifications

  • AOCN certification (NP). PALS certification.
