Position Title:Assistant Coach

Immediate Supervisor: Athletic Director or Designee

Summary (Job Goal): To help each participating student achieve a high level of skill, an appreciation for the values of discipline and sportsmanship and an increased level of self-esteem.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Other duties may be assigned.)

• Teaches participants in the assigned fundamentals and skills necessary for achievement in the sport involved.

• Assists in planning and scheduling a regular program of practice in season.

• Assists in overseeing the safety conditions of the facilities or area in which assigned sport is conducted at all times that students are present.

• Maintains and reports accurate statistics, record, and results of the season as directed by the head coach.

• Enforces discipline and sportsmanlike behavior at all times and establishes and oversees consequences for breach of such standards by individual students.

• Maintains competency in rules, rule interpretations, meet procedures, coaching techniques and general information about all aspects of the sport.

• Adheres to a highly efficient and technically sound program of injury prevention and follow up.

• Recommends purchase of equipment, supplies and uniforms as directed by the head coach.

• Maintains necessary attendance forms, insurance records, participant handbooks and similar paperwork as directed by the head coach.

• Promotes a positive image of the program and the District.

• Assists the head coach in developing a consistent and positive public communications procedure through the school andmediato inform the parents and general public about the athletic program.

• Regular and reliable attendance.

• Stay current in certifications and training needed to perform duties.

• Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervise students, assigned assistants and volunteers of particular program as directed by the head coach.

Minimum Education or Experience:

High School diploma required with experience playing and coaching in applicable sport. BA degree with a major or minor in physical education or equivalent hours and courses in coaching theory is preferred. Experience in physical education, coaching, first aid, CPR and sports medicine is preferred.

Licensure or Certification:

Iowa Coaching Endorsement required. ValidIowateaching license preferred.

Competency in the areas of content knowledge and strategies for the specific sport.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

Knowledge of conference, district and state rules in relevant sport.

Ability to function effectively as part of a coaching team, support peer coaches, plan collaboratively, and work constructively with the coaching team to solve problems that arise.

Possess the physical skills necessary to demonstrate techniques for the specific sport.

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Ability to speak effectively before groups of students or employees of the District.

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commission, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume.

Possess leadership skills and organizational ability.

Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work effectively with staff and school administration.

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field.

Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.

Ability to travel and work non-traditional hours.

    Work is performed continuously either inside or outside, depending on the sporting event. The noise level in this environment is quiet to loud, depending upon the activity and the particular location. The environment may have little or no air conditioning. Occasionally the employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with the public and other workers. Direct responsibility for the safety, well-being, and work output staff and students. Some travel required. All District buildings and grounds are tobacco and alcohol-free.
