GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Vice President, Chief Medical Officer (VP, CMO) reports to the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) . The VP, CMO is responsible for providing administrative and clinical leadership as defined by the Medical Staff Bylaws and/or as assigned by t h e CEO . This position is a member of the Executive Leadership team (ELT) and collaborates with all the members relative to carrying out the mission, vision , and values of Broadlawns Medical Center (BMC) .

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure credentialing, appointment, and reappointment processes for the medical staff are completed through appropriate bylaw , legal and peer review in a timely manner .

  • Review and update medical and dental staff bylaws annually ; recommend necessary c h anges to Medical Executive Committee , and present such changes to the CEO for further presentation to the Board of Trustees.

  • In collaboration with the Chief Operating Officer , this role identifies , develops, and implements new programs and services approved by the CEO to maintain and grow the organization's market share.

  • Partners with the VP of Human Resources to interview , select and hire/contract providers.

  • Serves as an ex-officio member of all medical staff committees.

  • Implement organizational policies and procedures ; including leading the organization i n corporate compliance activities related to functional areas.

  • Maintain a nominal amount of time practicing medicine within inpatient and outpatient areas .

  • Partners with Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), Oversee patient provider satisfaction services and programs ensuring exceptional patient experiences and efficiency are achieved .

  • Partners with the VP, Chief Quality and Safety Officer to ensure BMC obtains high performing clinical outcomes .

  • Partners with CEO to negotiate contracts as necessary and involving multi-disciplinary groups as appropriate .

  • Participates in the annual strategic planning process and the monitoring of the status of strategic initiatives ; including preparation of quarterly reports for board presentations, Accountability reports , and the annual reports for the community .

  • Partners with VP, Chief Quality and Safety Officer to provide oversight for Utilization Review processes ensuring best outcomes .

  • Provide support to Quality and Compliance/Risk management programs.

  • Deliver timely leadership including orienting , training , evaluating , hiring , disciplining and/or any other type of personnel management activities needed for providers and/or staff in supervising areas .

  • Work with marketing area in the development of applicable communication plans regarding the medical staff .

  • Represent BMC at various events , public hearings, board committees , citizen groups , and legislative opportunities for the purpose of promoting BMC ' s strategic initiatives .

  • Stay abreast of and advise the Executive Leadership team on healthcare issues related to areas of responsibil i ty .

  • Provide on-call administrative support as assigned .

    PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

  • Performance Accountability standards and goals will be approved by CEO on an annual basis.

  • Departments , physicians and staff are managed in a fair, productive and efficient manner .

  • Patient safety and satisfaction is maintained at a high level.

  • Quality standards are closely monitored and high level maintained.

  • Personnel issues and recruitment are managed in a timely manner.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Medical degree (MD , DO, DPM) from recognized and accredited medical school.

  • Appropriate certification from qualifying Board specialty .

  • Current license or lic e nse eligible to practice medicine in the state of Iowa .

  • Practiced medicine within prior 5 years .

  • Familiarity with teaching programs and committed to primary care teaching activities .

  • Demonstrated knowledge base of the business aspects of healthcare delivery including financing , managed care, and physician productivity.

  • Demonstrated evidence of building strong cooperative working relationships with physicians and in gaining their support with clinical program development.

  • Experience working with diverse population .

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills .

  • Eligible for medical staff appointment with BMC .

  • Five years leadership e x perience .

  • A positive , professional reputation in the medical community.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three years of Physician executive e x perience

  • Demonstrated e x perience in managing the activities of a medical staff office (c r edentialing , appointme n t process, by-laws , rules and regulations , etc . )

  • Master's degree in Business Administration or Healthcare Administration
