Administers nursing care to patients under the direction of the registered nurse; includes transporting patients, answering lights, assisting with activities, assessing patients, implementing patient's plan of care, and evaluating the patient's response to care in coordination with the physician.
Provides patient/family or caregiver education as directed.
Utilizes hospital information system to process orders/data and retrieve patient information.
Is knowledgeable in delegation of tasks to certified nursing assistants, patient care technicians and nursing technicians with patients.
Maintains knowledge of documentation requirements needed for patients' records.
Works under direct supervision using the Nurse Practice Act, Mercy Medical Center policies, nursing standards, and nursing judgment.
Maintains knowledge of equipment set-up, maintenance, and use (i.e., IV pumps, monitoring equipment, drainage devices, cautery, maternal and fetal monitors, defibrillators, etc.)
Works rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.
Initiates emergency support measures (i.e., cardiopulmonary resuscitation, protecting patient from injury).
Takes assigned call as defined in unit policy.
Assists the physician during a cesarean section or other surgical procedure that may occur in the Birthing Center by draping patient, passing instruments, tying suture, and the other activities involved with a surgical scrub.
Assists the physician during a vaginal delivery by setting up tables, draping, passing instruments, etc.
Assists the RN with the cleanup of the patient and room following any procedure.
Checks the crash cart, epidural care, and defibrillator daily.
Restocks supplies as needed on each shift.
Reports observations to licensed personnel.
Orders and maintains patient care supplies, equipment and environment.
Assists with clerical duties (i.e., answering phones, ordering supplies via CRT).
Effectively assumes job responsibilities of ancillary support during absence.
Possession of a current license as a practical nurse issued by the State of Iowa.
Successfully completes required medication examination prior to passing medication.
Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire.
BLS certified by the end of the orientation period (approximately six (6) weeks).
