ER and Critical Care Pharmacist

MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center is seeking a critical care/emergency medicine clinical staff pharmacist with rotating day and evening shifts as well as weekends. This is a decentralized clinical position with shifts in our critical care units and emergency department.

Critical care pharmacists at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center are essential members of the interdisciplinary critical care team and are responsible for attending interdisciplinary rounds, all medical emergencies, formal alerts within the hospital for stroke, trauma, and sepsis, providing drug therapy consultation, reviewing medication orders, facilitating medication distribution and administration, answering drug information questions, and other tasks as necessary. Critical care pharmacists rotate among our three critical care units (NTMICU, CSICU, CMICU).

Emergency medicine pharmacists at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center are integrated members of the interdisciplinary emergency medicine team. They collaborate directly with ED providers and nurses at the bedside to optimize and expedite critical life-saving therapies and are trained in medication administration. Emergency medicine pharmacistsrespond to all formal alerts in the emergency department including medical emergencies, stroke, trauma, STEMI and sepsis andare responsible for providing comprehensive clinical pharmacy services for all patients within the adult and pediatric EDs. Pharmacists in the ED will also assist in precepting APPE students, PGY1 and EM PGY2 pharmacy residents.


  • Reviews and interprets physician orders to assure that the drug, dosage form, and dose is appropriate for the patient's age, weight, and comorbidities. Checks for drug incompatibilities and allergies, and takes appropriate action when necessary.

  • Oversees and/or participates in assuring appropriate medications are prepared and delivered to care areas in a timely manner, and are stored both securely and in a manner appropriate for both stability and effective workflow.

  • Works collaboratively with other healthcare team members to provide pharmacotherapy recommendations with intent to achieve optimal patient outcomes across the continuum of care.

  • Supervises and mentors technicians, interns, and students working during their shift in order to maintain the accuracy and quality of pharmaceutical services.

  • Maintains quality and safety in the department through completion of quality control checks, identifying and reporting out medication errors and near misses, identifying process improvements and ensures appropriate documentation.

  • Provides accurate and timely responses to other healthcare professionals and patients regarding drug information questions and MercyOne medication use policies to assure safe and appropriate use of medications.

  • Participates in the orientation, instruction and training of pharmacy students, interns, pharmacy technicians, residents, pharmacists and other health professionals.

  • Knowledgeable and adheres to State and Federal laws, regulations, pharmacy policies, procedures and standard operating procedures, formulary and pertinent clinical practice guidelines.

  • Provides professional, engaging customer service to all patients, and healthcare providers with whom they work.

  • Performs other job functions as directed by the pharmacy manager/supervisor.


  • Pharmacy degree (BS or Pharm.D.) from an ACPE approved college of pharmacy.

  • 3 years of hospital experience is preferred.

  • Licensed, or eligible for licensure, pharmacist in Iowa. Must be licensed within 3 months of hire.

  • BLS certification within 3 months of hire.

  • Other certification if requested by direct supervisors/managers.

  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training for child and dependent adult abuse within three (3) months of hire.
