Job Description

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) and Department of Human Services (DHS) merged on July 1, 2022 to form one agency, the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). We are seeking an Epidemiologist.

This position will serve as the Bureau of Immunization and Tuberculosis Epidemiologist for the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services. The Bureau resides in the Public Health Division of the Department.

Under the supervision of the Chief of the Bureau, this position will provide epidemiological analysis of vaccine preventable diseases and immunization data. This position will assist with data related to the Immunization Program and the Public Health Tracking Portal. Duties include data tracking, statistical analysis, and reporting on immunization coverage levels compared to state and national benchmarks for immunization rates for all age groups and social/ economic determinants.

The position works in collaboration with program staff regarding data sets and leads work to collect, compile, analyze and report statistical data. This position will require the use of SAS statistical software and Tableau data visualization programs to complete reports and ad hoc data requests. This position will be responsible for analyzing data and preparing reports prior to submission to CDC and coordinating public facing data sets. Utilize data to perform statistical analysis of Bureau data. Disseminate data and evaluation results to internal and external stakeholders and use results to recommend specific action and/or new policies, procedures, and standards for program quality improvement and provide technical assistance to public health grantees on data related issues. Participate in Department data work groups, CDC site visits, and state and national trainings and workshops.

Monitor and analyze Immunization Registry Information System (IRIS) data to evaluate and implement measures to achieve high levels of data quality and data integrity. Analyzing data and identifying gaps in IRIS data sets and individual variables. Perform advanced data analysis to determine immunization coverage levels by select age cohorts and race and ethnicity percentages. This will include developing program goals and objectives; determining variables to be monitored; and data collection, analysis, and dissemination procedures. Collaboration with state and federal immunization partners to determine available data sources and complex data visualizations to allow the state to monitor immunization rates and implement data based strategies to increase immunization rates.

Compile and analyze immunization audit data from Iowa’s schools and licensed child care center audits. Participate in any recommendations to change the process to conduct audits based upon statistically significant conclusions and make policy or legal recommendations regarding Iowa Administrative Code, Chapter 7. Assist in the completion of state and CDC analytical reports and surveys regarding school and childcare audits based on statistical analysis of audit data by school, grade, immunization certificate type and other data variables. Analyze and disseminate data and prepare reports of schools and school districts with low immunization rates that are at increased risk of vaccine preventable disease outbreaks.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1) Graduation from an accredited college or university with a graduate degree in public health with at least two courses related to the principles and practice of epidemiology.

2) All of the following (a and b):

a. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a non-public health graduate degree with at least two courses related to the principles and practice of epidemiology; and b. Three years of experience in applied epidemiology in an infectious, noninfectious, or chronic diseases; environmental poisonings or conditions; injury prevention; or a substance misuse related epidemiology program.
