GENERAL SUMMARY: The Dosimetrist will use their knowledge of physics, anatomy and radiobiology to develop an optimal arrangement of radiation portals and exposures to spare normal and radiosensitive tissues while applying a prescribed dose by the Radiation Oncologist to the targeted disease volume ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : - Communicates and works closely with Simulation staff and Radiation Therapists on issues of patient setup and treatment. - Communicates and works closely with Radiation Oncologists and Medical Physicists in designing the treatment plan. - Requests physics support as needed from Medical Physicist - Develops treatment plans using needed resources and presents them to the Radiation Oncologist and Medical Physicists for review/approval. - Assists with brachytherapy procedures as needed. - Performs monitor unit calculations as needed - Documents treatment parameters in patient treatment chart to assure the clear and concise transfer of information from the treatment planning area to the treatment area. - Assists and makes recommendations to Radiation Therapist and Radiation Oncologist regarding patient set-up or positioning problems - Fabricates immobilization devices, custom bolus, custom shielding devices and other treatment aids - Solves immobilization and treatment position problems under pressure - Prioritizes work load to ensure plans, treatment devices, and monitor unit calculations are ready for the initial patient treatment as well as modifications required throughout the patient’s treatment course - Observes and reports patient problems to the Radiation Oncologist - Reports any misadministration to the Radiation Oncologist, Medical Physicist, or Department Director - Communicates with patients and family members in a compassionate manner - Must be a self-starter and able to work within a team - Utilizes professional and tactful communication skills - Maintains confidentiality at all times - Participates in staff development activities and orientation as requested
