ETS's Research & Development division is seeking an innovative individual to fill the role of Learning Scientist in the ETS AI Labs. The ETS AI Labs are comprised of cross-functional teams of learning scientists, instructional designers, research scientists, engineers, user research and design specialists, data scientists, and product owners. The ETS AI Labs develop solutions built on a foundation of learning and cognitive science principles and leverage interactive task design, machine learning, and data science to create effective and efficient technology-enhanced learning solutions.

Position Summary:

The Learning Scientist will drive evidence-based development of prototypes and product concepts to facilitate teaching and learning, particularly in language learning and/or digital personalized learning and assessment experiences. They will apply best practices in assessment and measurement, curriculum and instructional design, and student success literature to support online and in-class interventions, and personalized and adaptive pathways for K-20 and the workforce.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience (a) facilitating and implementing user-centered design (UCD), synthesizing relevant cognitive and learning science literature to produce learning science and design principles (LSDP), and applying principles in innovative learning experience designs (b) engaging in research with users of defined market segments at various stages in the prototype development lifecycle to inform the user experience, user interface, and usability of a solution (c) working collaboratively with scientists and developers to apply insights gleaned from both UCD, LSDP, and user research to prototype development.


  • Engage with users of target market and user segments to conduct visioning activities, needs assessments, validation of problem statements, and ongoing testing through the development lifecycle.

  • Create, synthesize, and apply learning science and design principles and user-centered research to prototypes and product concepts developed in the AI Research Lab.

  • Develop context-specific frameworks and assessment-for-learning models and to implement in the development of prototypes and product concepts.

  • Work with research scientists, engineers, software developers, and product owners in agile teams to support the efficient and effective development of product concepts and prototypes.

  • Conduct applied research on the intersection between best practice pedagogical principles and the practical needs of educators and learners to connect theory and practice and apply this research to the development of technology-enhanced solutions.

  • Communicate findings from research and development efforts with broad audiences.

Required Experience:

Education, Certifications, or Special Licenses:

  • A Masters or PhD in learning engineering, design, instructional design, or related area

Relevant Years of Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience applying learning science and design principles to the development of technology enhanced teaching and learning solutions. Candidates with less or more experience will be consider at the appropriate level.
