UnityPoint Health Psychologist-Physical Medicine and Rehab in Cedar Rapids, Iowa

The health psychologist is responsible for examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic intervention for individuals with behavioral and psychological concerns related to medical rehabilitation and/or health-related conditions. The psychologist practices within the scope of the profession of psychology for adult and pediatric patients. In addition, the psychologist is expected to contribute to department functioning and support the mission and objectives of the hospital.

Patient Care/Quality Improvement

  • Routinely manages complex patients

  • Examines patients/clients - obtains history, performs a systems review, and selects and administers or supervises the administration of discipline- and age-specific tests and measures to obtain data

  • Evaluates patients/clients - makes clinical judgments based on data gathered during the examination

  • Develops patient/client diagnoses or problem lists (cluster of signs and symptoms)

  • Develops patient/client prognoses (optimal level of improvement and time needed to achieve it)

  • Develops and implements patient/client interventions, including delegating and supervising support staff

  • Provides empirically supported psychotherapy and other therapeutic interventions based on patient needs and goals of care.

  • Provides patient and family education and training

  • Completes required patient care documentation and communication

  • Formulates and implements patients’ discharge plans in collaboration with others

  • Collaborates with hospital departments and community agencies to deliver coordinated care.

  • Completes appropriate documentation for all patient/client encounters in accordance with hospital and professional standards.

Evidenced Based Practice/Professional Development

  • Participates in appropriate Rehabilitation Services and hospital meetings

  • Participates in interdisciplinary task forces and committees

  • Participates in Performance Improvement activities

  • Contributes to program development

  • Participates in hospital and department provided in-services and community education

  • Participates in development and education of colleagues and trainees

  • Promotes a greater understanding of rehabilitation/health psychology in the hospital and community

  • Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and development in clinical practice, regulatory and fiscal issues

Effectiveness/Efficiencies

  • Submits charges for facility and professional fees according to professional and hospital standards

  • Maintains a safe and orderly work environment

  • PhD or PsyD in clinical or counseling psychology

  • Supervised training and experience in health psychology and/or rehabilitation psychology during practicum years.

  • Completed APA approved internship.

  • Completed postdoctoral fellowship.

  • Previous experience working in hospital preferred.

  • Must be Iowa Licensed Psychologist and Iowa Health Service Psychologist.

  • Previous experience in acute hospital and rehabilitation setting is preferred.

  • Basic computer knowledge and skills.
