ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Maintain performance in compliance with State and Federal laws and consistently demonstrates high standards of business and professional ethics. * Reviews medical records for completeness and assigns deficiencies electronically. * Abstracts pertinent information from patient records. Assigns ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, or CPT codes as appropriately. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology. * Queries physicians when code assignments are not straightforward or documentation n the record is inadequate, ambiguous, or unclear for coding purposes. * Compiles medical care and census data for statistical reports on types of diseases treated and surgeries performed. * Maintains and utilizes variety of health record indexes and storage and retrieval systems. * Operates computer to process, store, and retrieve health information. * Assists in special studies or research as needed. * Maintains professional growth and development. * Abides by the Standards of Ethical Coding and adheres to the Official Coding Guidelines. * Participates in staff meetings and hospital wide educational programs as required. * Actively supports and participates in performance improvement efforts. * Other duties as assigned MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: * Qualifications – Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology and pathophysiology. Knowledge of current coding systems. Computer literacy. * Work experience – Prefer one year as a coding specialist. * Education/Certifications/Licenses – Prefer associate and/or bachelor's degree from college or technical school; or combination of education and experience; or two years related experiences and/or training/ * Desired Work Traits – Experience coding hospital inpatient, observation, outpatient surgery, outpatient, and physician office coding. * Communication Skills – Ability to read, understands, and follows oral and written instruction according to the Standards of Behavior.
