Job Description:Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

85% – Teaching and Clinical Service:

Position responsibilities include primary commitments to service, instruction of senior veterinary students and junior pathology residents. Pathology service case work includes necropsy and biopsy service and case coordination. The candidate will participate in the weekend on-call duty as part of this service. The candidate will be expected to communicate effectively and respectfully both verbally and in writing with clientele, veterinary, graduate, and undergraduate students, staff, and colleagues, and model professional and ethical behavior to facilitate instruction of professional behavior to students. The department provides a complete necropsy service for the diverse species submitted to the ISU small and large animal clinics. These necropsy cases provide material for instructing senior veterinary students and junior pathology residents in necropsy techniques and lesion interpretation. The department also has a busy and expanding biopsy service with submissions from the ISU clinics as well as practicing veterinarians in Iowa and the surrounding region. The successful candidate would be expected to participate in biopsy service activities and assist in training junior pathology residents.

10% – Research & Scholarship:There will be opportunities to engage in scholarly activity through independent and collaborative research efforts, to present new information at relevant meetings, and to publish in peer-reviewed journals, books, and other media.

5% – Institutional Service:Seek professional educational opportunities related, but not limited to professional development, diversity awareness, implicit bias, and social justice education.

During times when the candidate is not on service, there should be ample opportunity to prepare for board certification. The successful candidate is invited to participate in seminars and learning opportunities of our anatomic pathology residency training program.

This position is 8-12 months, negotiable.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • DVM or equivalent.

  • Completion of a minimum of 36 calendar months of pathology training (necropsy and biopsy) in a standard veterinary anatomic pathology residency program.

  • Eligibility to sit for the ACVP Phase II Certifying Exam in 2021 or 2022

  • Should submit an application to sit for the American or European College of Veterinary Pathologists annual certification exam within 12 months of hire (if not already boarded)

  • The ability to effectively communicate (in writing and verbally) in a professional, respectful and courteous manner with a diverse range of stakeholders (diagnostic laboratory clientele, veterinary/graduate/undergraduate students, staff, and colleagues).

  • Ability to contribute to a successful work group and foster a team-oriented culture through positive interactions, active listening, meaningful collaborations, and the constructive exchange of ideas.

  • Evidence of experience working independently as diagnostic pathologist.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current certification by the American or European College of Veterinary Pathologists.

  • Experience teaching and/or mentoring.

  • MS or PhD in pathology or a related discipline.

  • Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
