Preferred Qualifications:Additional experience with industrial safety, fire safety, and security.

Experience with Simplex fire systems.

Experience with C-Cure security systems.

Ames National Laboratory is seeking applicants for a Plant Safety Patrol Officer or Plant Safety Sergeant. Under general supervision, this position performs duties to protect property and provide for the safety of the personnel of the Ames Laboratory. Main duties include: conducting facility tours looking for safety and security issues, monitoring and responding to fire/security system, and performing shift-specific assignments (i.e., fire extinguisher program, first aid kit/closet inventories, emergency response equipment inspections, emergency response postings). The Plant Safety Sergeant position provides functional supervision of the Plant Safety Patrol Officers.

The successful candidate will need to be detail oriented and able to communicate effectively with Laboratory staff, researchers, students, visitors, and the general public. Ability to walk 6 miles per shift; move 50 lbs; differentiate between various audible and visual alarms, and have good hand-eye coordination. Work hours are 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. with rotating weekend work and day(s) off during week accordingly. Holidays worked are rotated annually.

Required qualifications for the Plant Safety Patrol Officer: Two years experience in security and safety, or a combination of education and experience which provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities. Possession of a valid Iowa driver’s license.

Required qualifications for the Plant Safety Sergeant: Four years experience in security and safety, or A combination of education and experience which provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities which includes two years of experience at the level of Plant Safety Patrol Officer. Possession of a valid Iowa driver’s license.
