  • Position Summary

  • Under general direction, protects, promotes, and optimizes health and abilities. Prevents illness and injury. Alleviates suffering through the diagnosis and treatment. Advocates for patients and their families. Ensures all actions taken in carrying out responsibilities support patient centered care.

  • Under general direction, plans and facilitates the ongoing activities of an Infection Prevention Program for the medical center. Provides generalized and specialized professional skills in caring for neonatal through geriatric patients.

  • Position Responsibilities

  • Unit Specific Position Responsibilities

  • Investigates outbreaks, exposures, and potential transmissions of infections.

  • Conducts concurrent infection control surveillance and uses surveillance data to develop appropriate interventions. Uses basic statistical techniques to describe data, calculate rates, and critically evaluates significance of findings. Reports epidemiologically significant findings to the Infection Prevention Committee and other appropriate parties.

  • Teaches and evaluates isolation techniques and Standard Precautions.

  • Maintains an Infection Prevention Manual for the medical center. Is responsible for house-wide infection control policies & procedures and those of the Infection Prevention Program. Provide consultation for unit specific infection control policies and procedures.

  • Provides consultation, direction and resources to assist in the development of policies and procedures for patient care practices, environmental cleaning and sanitation, disinfection and sterilization.

  • Provides consultation and direction regarding regulatory compliance, construction issues, disaster and surge planning and during emergent, existing and/or ongoing infection control issues.

  • Participates in the organization's multidisciplinary approach for quality improvement strategies. Identifies opportunities for improvement based on data and observation.

  • Prepares and maintains appropriate reports, records and other statistical data and transmits this information to the appropriate state (i.e. IHC) and national databases (i.e. NHSN).

  • Conducts educational programs for hospital staff, patients and family, including in-service training programs about infection prevention, infection control and safety.

  • Conducts reviews/evaluations of various products with implications for infection prevention and manages the implementation of such new products throughout the organization.

  • Assists the Infection Prevention Coordinator with the implementation of policies & procedures applicable to the evaluation of staff following exposure to blood borne pathogens from source patients.

  • Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience

  • Required Qualifications (Including any licensure, certification, education):

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse and authorized by the State of Iowa to practice nursing.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) training, or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.

  • Mandatory Reporter training or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.

  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing.

  • CIC Certification within 3 years of beginning in the position.

  • Organizational Requirements:

  • De-escalation training prior to performing direct patient care or within 90 days of hire

  • Maintain stroke education per regulatory requirements.

  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • CBIC certification upon hire into position.

  • Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Proficient in communication skills.

  • Ability to be self-directed, flexible, and able to adapt to change.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in a professional and tactful manner with physicians, staff, patients and/or their representatives.

  • Ability to read and understand chart documentation.

  • Ability to demonstrate basic computer skills.

  • Ability to read, write and understand the English language.

  • Two years experience in medical/surgical, ICU or emergency nursing.

  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic, algebra, statistics and their application.

  • Ability to use critical thinking, problem solving and conflict resolution.

  • Ability to manage one’s time effectively.

  • Active Listening skills, giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times

  • Knowledge or medical diagnoses, disease processes, operative procedures, diagnostic testing and patient care processes.

  • Capable in data collection, anaylsis, and presentation.

  • Ability to impliment evidence-based guidelines, utilizing program and project management when necessary.

  • Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Proficiency in Excel.

  • Skill in statistical analysis.
