EHS Engineer Requisition ID: 27062 Job Location(s): Ames, IA, US Job DescriptionThe Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Engineer reports to the Site EHS Manager and is responsible for providing technical leadership and support with respect to matters impacting occupational safety and environmental health for the Ames locations.Job ResponsibilitiesDeveloping, recommending, and implementing practical, functional approaches to resolve safety, and environmental health issues in support of location strategies for achieving customer satisfaction and regulatory/policy complianceProviding advice and direction on safety and/or environmental health concerns; and works with employees at all organizational levels to affect corrective action and improvement strategiesServing as adviser to leaders, shop floor teams and safety committeesDelivering EHS training on required regulatory, corporate and site-specific topicsReviewing current and proposed regulations/corporate requirements and recommends appropriate program measures to ensure complianceLeading the site to sustain EHS Management Systems (ISO 14001 / 45001), Coordinator to ensure continuous improvement and ongoing certificationUtilizing six-sigma tools and behavior-based safety strategies to guide injury prevention effortsFacilitating root cause analyses of significant injuries and incidentsConducting investigations into incidents involving safety, health and environmental risks and prepare appropriate written reportsConducting internal safety health and/or environmental audits to verify compliance levelsEvaluating site safety, health and environmental systems, procedures and processes and implements changes to maximize effectivenessDeveloping EHS policies/procedures/systems and ensures that requirements are effectively integrated into standard operating proceduresEstablishing EHS plans and activities and providing technical guidance in the implementation of controls to minimize risksProviding expertise during management of change phases of operational changes to ensure that sound EHS control methodologies are integrated in changesConducting process hazard risk assessments as warrantedPerforming ergonomic assessments and providing technical guidance to employees to minimize risks associated with material handling, repetitive motion and workstation designReviewing new chemicals from an EHS perspective and ensuring appropriate controls are established prior to introduction into the workplaceInterfacing with regulatory agencies, as appropriateWorking with considerable freedom for independent actionWill have a substantial degree of decision-making authority relating to the safe operation of work processes that may have considerable impact on resultsThe Sr. EHS Engineer is expected to base actions and recommendations on sound health, safety and environmental principles and supporting dataPossesses the ability to effectively step in and lead in the absence of the site EHS ManagerMust be an effective communicator, change agent and influencerBackground and SkillsRequired (basic) qualificationsPrefer professional certification in safety (CSP), industrial hygiene (CIH), environmental CHMM, or a demonstrated path toward certification / equivalent years of experience. Strong written and verbal communication skills preferred.Work well as a team member and leader.Strong project management skills and bias for delivering results. Proficient in Microsoft Office, etc.Ability to lead, motivate, and influence others to achieve objectives.Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and make recommendations.Preferred qualificationsBachelor's degree in safety engineering/management, environmental engineering, industrial hygiene or related science.6+ years' experience in health, safety, ergonomics, and environmental disciplines.Job CriteriaStrong team-building skillsStrong organizational skills Adept at utilization of company-wide system
