Position Description
McFarland Clinic is currently accepting applications for a Full-time Cytotechnologist for its Ames office. Candidates should be service-oriented, a team player, and be able to provide extraordinary care, every day to our patients.
Responsibilities include:
Receives and accessions Cytology and Histology specimens into the laboratory information system (LIS).
Responsible for training and competency evaluation of employees working in the cytology section of the pathology lab.
Receive and prepare biological specimens for microscopic examination and/or molecular testing.
Classify cellular material according to established classifications and nomenclature.
Distinguish atypical cellular material for pathologist review. Requires one to exercise independent judgement and apply special knowledge to reach clinically relevant interpretations.
Review patient clinical history and relate it to microscopic observations in gynecologic samples being screened. Bringing to the attention of the pathologist any discrepancies or unexpected findings.
Aids in locating, reviewing and reporting of all previous cytologic findings on patients with atypia for review by the pathologist.
Prepare and review yearly quality assurance reports as well as monthly maintenance logs for equipment used in the cytology section in the laboratory.
Answers telephone, takes messages, and provides necessary information in a calm and professional manner.
Prepare and review cytology procedures as required
Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
Maintains work areas in a neat and organized fashion. Adhere to clinic and laboratory safety standards.
Performs other work within the Pathology Department as required.
Education
Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or Cytotechnology.
Certification/License
ASCP certification in Cytotechnology or equivalent required
Specialist in Cytotechnology preferred
Days: Monday - Friday
Hours: 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (with some flexibility)
Experience
3-5 years of experience in a laboratory leadership/supervisory role
At least 10 years of experience working as a cytotechnologist in a high throughput lab
