Job Description:Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Animal Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, seeks applicants for a 9-month tenure-track Assistant Professor with an emphasis in companion animals. Position responsibilities are approximately 65% teaching, 30% research, and 5% institutional service. The successful applicant is expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching undergraduate courses related to companion animal science and management. They will also be expected to develop a collaborative, externally-funded research program. Areas of potential research related to companion animals include, but are not limited to, nutrition, genetics, health, physiology, reproduction, lactation, pet food processing, behavior and training, or meat science/meat safety (as applied to pet food). The successful applicant may also choose to pursue a research program based on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

The successful applicant will demonstrate the ability to address emerging and traditional issues in companion animal science and management and demonstrate the ability to relate those issues to students and to other stakeholders. The successful applicant will have ample opportunity to work in cross-disciplinary teams for both teaching and research with faculty in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, or other colleges across campus. Evidence of effective written and oral communication skills is required. Additionally, the successful applicant must have demonstrated the ability to work in a team-based, collaborative environment to solve problems, develop programs, and teach effectively. Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Ph.D. in animal science or related area with an emphasis in companion animal science by start date and teaching experience in companion animal science/management

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Documented evidence of effective teaching

  • Documented evidence of the scholarship of teaching and learning

  • Experience in companion animal science and/or companion animal management

  • Experience working in a team-based, collaborative environment

  • Documented experience in research and/or outreach in areas of animal science related to companion animals, such as nutrition, genetics, health, physiology, reproduction, lactation, pet food processing, behavior and training, or meat science/meat safety (as applied to pet food).
