  • Position Summary

  • Anesthesia technologists are integral members of the anesthesia patient care team. Their role is to assist licensed anesthesia providers in the acquisition, preparation and application of various equipment and supplies required for the delivery of anesthesia care. This may be performed in a variety of clinical settings including the operating room, interventional and diagnostic radiology, post anesthesia care unit, intensive care unit, cardiac catheterization lab, emergency department and endoscopic suites.

  • Ensure anesthesia equipment is properly functioning.

  • Will maintain stroke education per regulatory requirements.

  • Require a thorough understanding of the gas machine‚Äôs normal operation and troubleshooting procedures, and be able to perform routine cleaning and basic maintenance on all of its subsystems, including calibration and testing.

  • Remains current with manufacturer instructions on care and maintenance of anesthesia equipment, knowledge of service records and demonstrates consistent abilities with those requirements.

  • Understand gas storage and tank markings, and be able to read the gas monitors at a glance.

  • Consult operating room schedule to determine supply and equipment needs for procedures; prepare anesthetizing locations for indicated procedure to include setting up and calibrating monitoring devices; troubleshoot anesthesia equipment malfunctions, routing non-functional equipment to the proper department for repair.

  • Demonstrate the principles of basic and advanced airway management in all phases of the perioperative episodes of care. Applies cricoid pressure and assists in setting up the glidescope/fiberoptic scope / LMA and other devices.

  • Is knowledgeable of infection control recommendations and guidelines.

  • Cleans and disinfects patient and non-patient care areas. Cleans and disinfects all types of body fluids and hazardous waste

  • Retrieves and decontaminates reusable patient medical equipment between patient uses according to established procedures.

  • Removes general/ potentially infectious medical waste and recyclable items to appropriate containers and disposal areas.

  • Performs cleaning tasks as assigned to meet the needs of the department.

  • Assists in the preparation of the operating room suite, opens sterile supplies to the sterile scrub tech,and obtains needed equipment as designated by OR Nurse or Scrub Technician.

  • Obtain supplies and equipment as requested by anesthesia provider.

  • Assist anesthesia providers using aseptic or sterile technique with non-invasive and invasive patient procedures including peripheral and/or central intravenous and/or arterial line placement; airway management techniques including mask, endotracheal and /or emergency methods and regional anesthesia techniques.

  • Assist with patient transport and positioning.

  • Performs duties such as connecting/ disconnecting oxygen, monitors, suction, power and light cords outside of the sterile field as directed

  • Assembles the essential anesthesia equipment i.e. IV (intravenous)

  • Assist anesthesia providers with physiological monitoring of patients notifying the anesthesia providers(s) of abnormal changes in vital signs and/or physical appearance of the patient.

  • Maintains stock of drugs, supplies and equipment in anesthesia workroom, storage carts and machines in operating rooms as well as other predetermined areas.

  • May be responsible for purchasing and distributing supplies and equipment and maintaining inventories and service records. Demonstrate stewardship: to manage resources responsibly

  • Checks for expirations of supplies and wrapped equipment in assigned areas.

  • Exhibits and promotes a cooperative team spirit.

  • Assumes responsibility for administering basic life support (BLS) until clinical/medical staff arrives.

  • Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience

  • Required Qualifications (Including any licensure, certification, education):

  • Completion of Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree or equivalent

  • De-escalation training prior to performing direct patient care or within 90 days of hire

  • Completion of Anesthesia Technology Program education and ASATT certification exam

  • All clinical night staff routinely working between the hours of 2300-0700 that work in Acute Rehab, Med Tele, Med Surg, Birthways, PEDS, NICU, and Oncology AND all clinical staff that work in Nursing Support Team, Behavioral Health, ED, ICCU, and House Managers will be required to take the combative patient response team training within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment. Individuals less than 18 years old are excluded.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) training, or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training, or within 1 year of hire and must maintain throughout employment.

  • Mandatory Reporter training or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.

  • Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Previous related work experience in a health care facility is preferred.

  • Skills in the use of patient transport equipment, safe patient handling and/ or techniques.
